초록

A Vampire used to be considered as an antiquated mythological figure. However, it is now transformed into a character that possesses features that humans desire such as youth, immortality, charm, strength, and superpowers. This paper focused on how vampire films which had been generally categorized as Gothic began to transcend boundaries of genre after <Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles>. To explore them, the paper analyzed the features of genre deconstruction in the subject of fear with a psychological perspective. Vampire films were originally categorized as a Gothic horror thriller which has specific subject of fear and anxiety. However, this changed dramatically after <Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)> focusing on the vampire with a human side depicted. In some films, the characters even voluntarily become vampires. The subject became a vampire find out lack of being by staring into the mirror and desire again. Ironically, what the egoistic vampires desire is beloved from the others. Vampire films in the past had created a sense of horror with any subject of horror as "ding an sich." However, with greater curiosity for taboo, contemporary vampire films attempted post-modernistic transformation by internalizing the double-sidedness of humans. Such factors and plots reflecting them can be considered the reasons for the advent of vampire films of not only mixed genres but also those that transcends genre. We are now consuming vampire films not as a horror film, but as a jouissance across human oppression and impulse.
