초록
This paper focuses on the ideology of a film that has been one of sensitive and disputatious issues. I would like to concentrate on two cases to elaborate my argument: one is Princess Mononoke (もののけ姬, 1997) directed by Hayao Miyazaki(宮崎駿), and the other is Avatar (2009) directed by James Cameron. Both of two films follow a narrative structure that nature has a conflict with a developed material civilization, but the former wins the latter in the end. For that reason, these films seems to criticize facilities of civilization which have tried to dominate nature. However, if we make a further investigation into the point, we can find out another aspects. In that respect, I would argue that Princess Mononoke comes from militaristic aesthetics based on Shinto(神道) thought and Avatar is possessed with the White Messiah. In conclusion, each of films contains Japanese chauvinism or white racism behind the scenes, even though two films have a critical mind about modern civilization. As I mentioned above, there are a lot of cases that ideologies in a film were revealed in secret.
