본 연구는 멕시코에 계약이민으로 이주한 한인과 일본인을 비교하는 데에 목적을 둔다. 두 집단 모두 급속한 근대화와 경제개발로 인해 국내 노동력이 부족해진 멕시코의 외국인노동자 유입정책과 한일 각 사회의 정세 악화에 따른 농촌의 몰락, 도시인구의 과잉화 등으로 인한 해외이주 장려정책의 영향으로 멕시코로 이주하게 되었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 비슷한 시기에 멕시코로 이주한 한인과 일본인 이민자에 대해 계약이주의 배경, 과정 및 정착 등을 중심으로 비교하였다. 그 결과 멕시코 정부와의 관계, 중계자 역할을 한 이민회사의 수, 모집내용의 차이, 기존 이민사회의 형성과 정보, 이주 목적 등에서 한인과 일본인의 이민에는 큰 차이가 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 한인 이민의 이주 과정에서 나타난 다양한 사회현상이 일부 일본인 이민의 경우에도 공통적으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 한인의 멕시코 이주의 특성과 공통점을 넓은 시각에서 조망하기 위해서, 유사한 동아시아계 이민에 관한 비교연구의 의미와 필요성이 매우 중요하다는 점을 시사하고 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to compare Koreans and Japanese as East Asian contract immigrants who migrated to Mexico in the early 20th century. The contract migration of Koreans and Japanese to Mexico is closely related to the policy of introducing foreign workers in the modernization process of Mexico. In addition, this study indicated that the decline of the rural economy in both countries resulting from the worsening situation in East Asian society and the overpopulation of urban residents played an important role in accelerating the contract migration. Against this backdrop, this study compared the background, process and settlement of contract migrants between Korea and Japan who migrated to Mexico almost at the same time. The study showed that there are significant differences in the relationship between Korea and Japan with the Mexican government, the number of immigration companies that acted as intermediaries, recruitment advertisements for immigrants, and the purpose of immigration. Nevertheless, common social phenomena also appeared in the migration process of Koreans and Japanese. In this vein, this study suggests that a comparative study on similar migration in East Asia is very useful in order to identify the unique characteristics and similarities between Korean and Japanese migration to Mexico in a broader perspective.
