Abstract
Food practice has been recognized as an important factor in the formation and maintenance of overseas migrants communities. This study is focused on international students, who are relatively marginalized in previous food and migration studies, especially those from Vietnam and Indonesia, the Southeast Asian countries that are growing rapidly in Korea. This study confirms that food practice has a significant effect on the community of international student, as previously claimed by relevant prior studies, and the conclusion obtained from the comparative study of the international students from Indonesia and Vietnam can be summarized in three ways: First, in the case of Indonesian students, there are restrictions on food practice due to the religious factors, while Vietnamese students showed a relatively autonomous attitude toward Korean food. Second, while Indonesian students have an open mind to use food gatherings as an opportunity to form new relationships with outsiders, Vietnamese students' food gatherings differ in that they are based on existing social relationships and the significance of it lies in the identification of belonging, bond and solidarity with each other. Finally, the food practices mentioned above have also been found to affect the sustainability of each community. While the Indonesian students community shows the discontinuity of operation focused on 'students in a campus', the Vietnamese students community shows continuity and expandability beyond time and space. This study suggests that the practice of food that reflects the socio-cultural aspects of a particular country can have a different effect on the formation of a migration community as well as on their sustainability and settlement, and through the study of food practice by Vietnamese and Indonesian students, it has its significance in expanding existing migration, food and Southeast Asian-related research.
