2010년 이후 에스닉 푸드를 둘러싼 한국의 음식문화 분석: 일상적 다문화주의의 표상

이 글은 현대 한국사회에서 음식을 매개로 펼쳐지는 일상생활에서의 문화 다양성 현상, 즉 ‘일상적 다문화주의(everyday multiculturalism)’에 대한 분석을 m통하여 한국사회의 다문화주의 특징과 이를 둘러싼 문화정치의 문제를 살펴보고자 한다. 2010년대 들어 한국사회에서는 세계화의 심화로 해외여행 증가에 따른 외국음식에 대한 지식과 경험의 확산과 음식에 대한 높은 대중적 관심이나타났다. 이 연구는 이태원, 안산 등을 비롯한 서울과 수도권 지역에서 음식 관련 업종에 종사하고 있는 이주민에 대한 인터뷰를 통하여 에스닉 푸드를 매개로 한 이들의 한국사회 로컬화 과정을 살펴보고, 한국의 에스닉 푸드가 서구 선진국에서 에스닉 푸드의 생산과 소비를 둘러싸고 나타나는 다소 이분법적인 음식문화정치와는 다른 양상을 보여주고 있음을 주장한다. 즉, 이주민의 로컬화 과정에서 에스닉 푸드는 이주민들의 민족정체성이나 인종에 따른 위계화된 차 이의 재생산으로 환원되기 힘든 보다 복잡한 역할을 하고 있다.
Abstract
This study is concerned with everyday multiculturalism, which is related to cultural diversity and cultural politics taking place through the daily consumption and production of ethnic foods in contemporary Korean society. Entering 2010, Korean society underwent deepened globalization process; more and more people in Korea seem to travel abroad and expand their popular knowledge and experience regarding foreign foods. Conducting deep interviews with migrants, who make a living through ethnic food restaurant and business in and around the city of Seoul, this article examines the localization process of those migrants through ethnic food. In doing so, I argue that cultural politics of ethnic food in Korea can be differentiated from the one in the western societies. Ethnic foods in Korea play a more complicated role than often described in the western theories of ethnic food politics. They cannot be simply understood in terms of the hierarchical difference of ethnicity and race.
