Abstract
This study examines the economic circumstances of the Hamyang Park clan, focusing on the lineage of Park Se-yeong(朴世榮, 1480~1552), tracking these circumstances amidst shifts in their residential areas and subsequent changes in their social identity. The Hamyang Park clan was a prominent central bureaucratic family that resided in Seoul until the mid-18th century. However, due to political decline and succession issues requiring adoption, they relocated their main residence to the Icheon(利川) area in Gyeonggi Province, and in 1905, moved again to Buyeo(扶餘) in Chungcheong Province. These moves represented a shift in identity from a central bureaucratic noble family to a geungi(近畿, near the capital) noble family, and finally to a local Yangban(兩班). The research confirms that the changes in residence and identity were accompanied by economic fluctuations. The family’s economy while residing in Seoul, confirmed by their substantial land and slave holdings, was significantly larger and more dynamic in its management and acquisition activities compared to later periods. When the family moved from Seoul to Icheon in the mid-18th century, they initially maintained a similar economic scale to their time in Seoul. However, by the 1860s, their economic size and vitality began to decline. The relocation to Buyeo occurred in 1905, again centered around the succession of the head family line. Preparations for this move, including the prior purchase of houses and woodlands in the Buyeo area, allowed for a stable settlement. Subsequently, the Hamyang Park clan maintained their status as local Yangban and landlords both socially and economically, continuing to perform the role of key local elites throughout the transition to the modern era.
