5·18 생존자의 예술치유경험을 통한 탄력적재통합 연구: 광주 트라우마센터를 중심으로

초록

광주 트라우마센터는 한국 최초의 국가폭력 생존자를 위한 공공기관 치유센터로 5·18 생존자와 국가폭력생존자의심리·정신적 치유를 목표로 심리상담 프로그램과 예술치유 프로그램을 제공하고 있다. 하지만 2012년부터 운영된 광주 트라우마센터의 예술치유 프로그램이 5·18 생존자들의 삶에 어떤 영향과 변화를 미쳤는가를 구체적으로 연구한 학술논문은 전무한 실정이다. 이에 착안하여, 본 논문은 ‘5·18 생존자들의 삶에 예술치유 참여경험은 어떤 변화와 의미를 만들어냈는가’를 주요연구문제로 다뤘다. 이를 통해 현재 4·16 세월호참사 피해자를 위한 ‘안산온마음센터’를 포함하여, 사회적 트라우마에 대한 치유와 회복이 필요한 이들을 위한 정책과 예술관련 지원사업의 논의를 풍성하게 하는것이 연구의 목적이다. 연구의 참여자(N=10)는 광주 트라우마센터에서 예술치유 프로그램에 2년 이상 참여한 5·18 생존자들(n=7)과 이들에대한 경험적 이해와 통찰을 갖춘 트라우마센터 관계자(n=3)로 참여관찰과 심층면접기법을 사용하여 자료를 수집했다. 수집된 자료는 회복탄력성(resilience) 이론 중 Richardson의 ‘탄력적 통합과정(Resilient Integration)’ 모델과 기존연구에서 증명된 예술치유의 단계별 효과모형을 결합하여 분석틀로 사용했다. 이를 통해 5·18 생존자들이 인식하는 위험요인과 보호요인을 도출했으며, 예술치유 과정 속에 형성된 효과와 의미를 구조적으로 분리시켜 도출함으로서 연구문제에 충실하고자 노력했다. 연구결과, 예술치유 참여경험은 5·18 생존자의 보호요인을 강화하고 위험요인의 부정적 역할을 완화함으로써, 역경 뒤 가장 이상적인 상태인 탄력적 재통합을 도운 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구는 기존에 다뤄지지 않았던 5·18 생존자들의 예술치유 참여경험을 회복탄력성 개념과 예술치유의 단계별 모형을 대입하여 분석하고, 이에 대한 정책제언을 목표로 하였다는 점에서 이전의 연구와 차별성을 갖는다. 또한, 본 연구의 결과는 세월호 생존자 및 유가족에 대한 사회적 트라우마 대책이 시급한 경기 지역정책에 있어 기여 가능한 시사점을 제공한다.

Abstract

The survivors of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, also known as Gwangju Democratization Movement, have suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder and extreme life challenges in many aspects. Gwangju Trauma Center (GTC) opened in 2012 as a means to provide mental health services to 5·18 survivors, including therapeutic arts workshops. This research attempts to find how and what elements of GTC’s arts workshops have help the 5·18 survivors to overcome their difficulties, to find their own strength (resilience), and to ultimately lead the status of resilient reintegration. In addition, this research seeks for its implied meanings and its implications for policy in terms of seeking an potent role of arts in today’s society. For data collection, in-depth interviews and participatory observation were applied to understand how the research participants see themselves differently after attending the therapeutic arts workshops. As an analytical framework, Richardson’s Resilient Reintegration model were used by implementing some important findings based on the literature reviews in therapeutic arts and its impacts. The research participants(N=10) for the qualitative research were composed with the sets of the workshop participants(n=7) as well as the staff members of the GTA(n=3), which make the total number of ten. The research participants showed the signs of resilient reintegration, such as altruism and reinterpretation of the adversity. In regards to these results, the study concludes with some profound implications from a policy perspective by investigating on the social role and impacts of the arts. This study also provides critical policy implications for the survivors of Sewol Ferry Disaster who are experiencing social trauma and for the role of Gyeonggi provincial government.
