Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the intentions behind the use of the three gates of Seon - namely, Unmun-samgu, Hwangyong-samgwan, and Dosol-samgwan- by Seon masters in their guidance of practitioners, and to explore the contemporary significance and relevance of these gates. The content of this study may be summarized as follows. First, the problem of life and death has been one of the most fundamental concerns of humanity since antiquity. When we consider the views on life and death held by four major thinkers from East and West, Confucius stated, “If you do not yet know life, how can you know death?” Zhuangzi taught that one should not cling to life and death, but rather live by entrusting oneself to the natural course of things. Socrates emphasized the immortality of the soul and the importance of caring for it, arguing that one should not fear death but instead live a life devoted to the cultivation of the soul. Nietzsche asserted, “Die at the right time—thus teaches Zarathustra.” Second, within Seon Buddhism it is taught that liberation from life and death becomes possible through the attainment of enlightenment, and that the Three Gates function as one of several expedient means toward this end. In the Unmun Samgu, the Seon masters presented the three phrases of hamgaegeongon, jeoldan-jungnyu, and supachukrang; in the Hwangyong Samgwan, the three gates of “my hand and the Buddha’s hand,” “my foot and the donkey’s foot,” and “each person’s karmic conditions”; and in the Dosol Samgwan, the three gates of “the grass of ignorance,” “self-nature,” and “liberation from life and death.” Through these formulations, Seon masters provided their students with practical and experiential pathways toward enlightenment. In conclusion, this paper has examined how Eastern and Western thinkers, together with Seon masters through the framework of the Three Gates, understood and sought to transcend the problem of life and death. In particular, Seon masters approached this issue through perspectives and methods of practice fundamentally distinct from those of other religious or philosophical traditions.
