Abstract

This is to look into the theory of character and subjugation of the northern areas of Sapgyo An Seok-gyeong, a Noron-inclined literary man in the 18th century, who didn't enter the government service but was out of office through his life, and to draw their significance. Sapgyo's theory of character estimates a historic man in the ideology, 'Jonwangyangi'(尊王攘夷)', and in the middle of the standard of judgment is the presence of civilization. He understood 'Jonwangyangi' as a subjective and positive idea, building his own standard of valuation, that is, civilization, rather than as a fastened thought in 'Flunkyism(事大主義)'. Moreover, Sapgyo clarified the will to realize the subjugation of the northern areas strongly and it is not away from reality. He accurately understood the inside and outside of the country and knew it was impossible at that time. But he was never frustrated with such a fact but, to change from impossibility to possibility, uncovered Choseon's then current problem, tried to find its resolution, and made Choseon a country having a strong power to make it possible to realize his subjugation of the northern areas.
