Abstract

This article is designed to identify the total size and character of Korean classics for starting of the 『Compilation of Korean Classics Collections』 project. The representative achievements of the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics can be presented in the publishing project titled 『The Comprehensive Edition of Korean Literary Collections』. 『The Comprehensive Edition of Korean Literary Collections』 grasped the total size of literary works of Korean classics through a thorough documentary survey, and established objective criteria to confirm the composition of the documents. Based on this, 1,259 literary works were compiled through a long-term, large-scale master plan, by which the Institute was able to compile a total of 500 books over 30 years without a hitch. Before we begin 『The Comprehensive Edition of Korean Classics Collections』, we will proceed with the task of examining the total size of Korean classics based on the achievements and limitations of prior research. First of all, the research will look at how to define "Korean classics" and examine how to distinguish between different classics. Then, a method will be designed to calculate the total size of Korean classics within realistic limits. Accordingly, the list for gross domestic product calculations will be investigated and compiled by category of books to deduce the total size of Korean classics closer to reality and briefly discuss their character.
