Abstract

This study examines the possibility of brain drain and growing spatial inequality owing to the selectiveinter-regional migration into the Seoul Metropolitan Areas. This analysis shows the number of people have movedbetween origin and destination in a given period(1996, 2000) by the administrative unit of Si· Gun· Gu. Both theprocess of population decrease in Seoul and its expending the power of influence occur simultaneously. An age-disaggregate decomposition is able to highlight destination choice among various age groups. Age-disaggregatedcharacter in migration reveals considerable complexity about the aggregate trends. Particular types of people, agedbetween 20~29 have greater propensity to migrate into Seoul from other provincial areas. The outflow of well-educated young people(brain drain) may induce the growing spatial inequality.
