Abstract

This study analyzed the current status of democratic citizenship education in schools and the perceptions of teachers and students about the contents and methods related to the teaching of democratic citizenship education. As a result, it was confirmed that the perceptions of teachers and students about “the democratic environment of the school, student participation in class, democratic citizenship education in the school activities, and the level of democratic attitude practice of students” were very positive. In addition, it was found that they agreed on the importance of the contents of democratic citizenship education in schools and the usefulness of the methods of democratic citizenship education in schools. However, there are cases in which student participation in class autonomy or school decision-making processes is not guaranteed systematically, and it was confirmed that the degree of student participation decreased as the class participation method with higher student initiative were used. Among the school activities, negative responses were relatively high in the items related to activating the participation of in-school decision-making or local social affairs. In addition, the preference for the importance of items related to economic life as the content of democratic citizenship education in schools was relatively low, and the higher the student-led class method, the higher the rate of negative responses from teachers to the usefulness. Based on the results of this analysis, a plan to establish a system in which students' opinions can be expressed freely, a creative experiential activity program to obtain various opportunities for participation inside and outside the school, and a plan to improve teachers' awareness of high student-led teaching methods can be developed. There is a need to find a way to improve the level of preparation of both, students and teachers. In addition, an in-depth analysis of the reasons for the lower student participation level and the lower preference for the importance of items related to economic life will need to be analyzed in-depth.
