Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop a concept learning approach for social studies, specifically for the concepts of nation and government, utilizing analogy—a tool gaining attention in cognitive psychology as an effective method for concept formation. Concept learning in social studies has been developing since the mid-20th century based on findings from cognitive psychology research. This study analyzed trends in cognitive psychology research and confirmed that analogy is recognized as an effective tool for concept formation. In cognitive psychology, analogy involves comparing structures across different domains, enabling the effective explanation or learning of new domains through analogies from familiar ones. Furthermore, the analysis of research trends confirmed that analogy-related models, such as SMT (structure-mapping theory), are being utilized in diverse ways within concept learning. The concepts of state and government were selected as social studies concepts to demonstrate the effectiveness of concept learning using analogy. State and government are essential concepts for maintaining the political system of democracy and are covered in the social studies curriculum starting from grades 5-6 in elementary school. However, the concept of the state includes abstract components such as sovereignty and government, and the relationships between the state's components are complex, making it a very difficult concept for elementary students. Therefore, to enhance the effectiveness of concept learning about the state and government, it is necessary to utilize analogy starting from areas more familiar to elementary students. To develop a concept learning approach using analogy, this study analyzed organisms and ships as suitable comparative objects for the concepts of state and government. The analysis confirmed that ships, rather than organisms, are a more appropriate comparative object for the democratic political system. Applying SMT, a concept learning approach was developed that compares the structures of the ‘ship’ domain with the ‘state’ domain. Concurrently, prerequisites and considerations for effectively utilizing analogy in social studies concept learning were examined.
