Abstract
The purpose of this study was to provide baseline data to develop physical activity (PA) guidelines for with visual impairments (VI) based on the results that analyzed domestic and international research related to physical activity for promoting fitness in the target group. For the current review research, the author finalized a total of six articles deemed appropriate for inclusion among Korean and international journal articles that studied with VI using PA interventions between 2000 and 2018. This study presented five conclusions as follows: (a) there were an unfortunate scarcity of studies that focused on health and fitness of the elderly with VI in Korea and overseas; (b) For research conducted on the elderly over 80 years old, the crucial factors in determining their engagement in PA was discovered to be health conditions, limitation of cognitive ability, and the capability to walk of the subjects; (c) there were significant effects on physical fitness in the elderly with VI when they participated in short-term PA intense programs with physical training specialists; (d) foreign research has primarily focused on falling or strength of lower extremities and balance of the elderly with VI. Whereas, research regarding such topics were lacking in Korean journals; the quantity of PA programs promoting physical fitness for the elderly with VI were critically scarce. Hence, scientifically validated PA programs, with detailed exercise intensity, methods, and frequency guidelines and tailored to enhance physical fitness and health of the elderly, is in urgent need.
