미니멀적 특성을 통한 제품디자인의 지속가능성 연구

미니멀리즘은 산업혁명의 영향으로 탄생한 모더니즘과 유사한 시대적 요소와 표현적 특성을 가진다. 그동안 미니멀리즘은 예술의 한 양식으로서, 그리고 간결함을 표현하는 디자인의 수식어로 존재했다. 그러나 미니멀리즘이 가지고 있는 배경과 특성은 효율성과 절제를 고려하는 지속가능 디자인과 깊은 연관성을 보였으며, 본 연구는 그 두 가지 사이의 공통점을 찾아내고 미니멀리즘을 지속가능 디자인의 한 방향으로서 설정할 수 있을지에 대한 고찰이다. 1차 대전 이후 자원의 부족은 예술계에 영향을 주었고, 장식을 배재한 새로운 사조를 낳았다. 또한, 산업혁명 이후 대량생산과 맞물려 생산에 효율적인 형태를 추구하게 되었다. 독일공작연맹과 바우하우스에서는 디자인을 이미 생산과 불가분의 관계로 보았으며, 효율성과 대량생산을 위한 방법으로 여겼다. 이 개념은 디터 람스를 통해 브라운(Braun)의 디자인에 계승되었고, 디터 람스에게 영향을 받은 조나단 아이브를 통해 애플(Apple)의 제품들에서 가능성을 입증했다. 미니멀리즘은 그러한 목적(생산의 효율성)을 만족하게 하는 조형적 특성이었으며, 지속가능성에 부합되는 속성들(절제, 효율, 지속성 등)과 유사한 방향성을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 디자인과 제품에서 드러난 미니멀 디자인의 사례들을 관찰하고 미니멀 디자인의 속성들을 해석하여 그중 지속가능성과 관련된 소재적 측면에서 ‘소재의 단순화’, 기술적 측면에서 ‘분해·조립의 단순화’ 그리고 시각적 측면에서 ‘시각 요소의 단순화’의 세 가지 세부 방향성을 탐색하였으며 향후 지속가능 디자인을 위한 적용 요소를 구성하기 위한 기반을 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
Minimalism has a similarity in historic and expressive aspects to Modernism from the Industrial Revolution. So far, Minimalism only was an art form or a form of expression showing simplicity. However Minimalism shows a strong connectivity to Sustainable Design considering effectivity and the restrain through its background and features. This study is a consideration of the intersection both Minimalism and Sustainable Design and how to adapt Minimalism as a way to Sustainable Design. The rack of resources after the First World War impacted on the art world and brought new trend excluding decorations, and it brought also pursuing effective form to mass production. The Deutscher Werkbund and the Bauhaus already treat that the design is inseparable from production and also think it as a key of efficiency and mass production. This concept was succeeded by Dieter Rams to the design of Braun , and prove its possibility through Jonathan Ive, Apple’s VP of design who influenced by Dieter Rams. Minimalism is a design direction to satisfy such role (effectivity of production) and it is led to present. This study set up three directions which related in Sustainable design as analyzing examples of Minimalism in design and products. Those are ‘Uni-Materialization’ in material aspect, ‘Simplification of Assembly and Disassembly’ in technical aspect and ‘Minimizing Exterior Appearance’ in visual aspect. The role of this study is suggesting the basis to form application factors for Sustainable Design with those directions.
