Abstract
Alex Garland’s Ex Machina focuses on the reality of technology ethics that we are facing with the development of AI. The argument surrounding artificial intelligence that surpasses human capabilities or is so sophisticated that it is difficult to distinguish from human, contains potential expectations or fears of modern society. At the same time, there is a point where the use of human-like artificial intelligence, that is imitative, intersects with viewing a movie which is image but real existence. Ex Machina raises questions about the meaning of human existence, thinking and being conscious as a human being. This study attempts to understand the origin and essence of movies, the distinction between human and AI, and the perception of physical entities and images, which can be found in the text of Ex Machina. With the Turing test that distinguishes humans and AI, the core of the plot of Ex Machina at the center, it examines how philosophical motifs such as, Plato’s allegory of the cave, Jean-Louis Baudry’s le dispositif, Frank Jackson’s Mary in the Black and White Room, and watching movies were used in terms of visual narrative.
