Abstract

This study constructs a panel dataset for 35 detailed industries in Korea from 1970 to 2005 to analyze the impact of total factor productivity (TFP) growth on energy intensity. Using a panel fixed-effects model, the analysis finds that an increase in TFP reduces energy intensity. This effect is more pronounced in industries with high energy intensity and is particularly significant in service industries where energy accounts for a larger proportion of total costs. These findings suggest that in industries with strong incentives for energy conservation, productivity growth efforts are aligned with improvements in energy efficiency.
