Abstract
It is important to use energy efficiently not only for climate changeconcerns but also for sustainable economic growth. Energy intensity, which means energy consumption per unit of production, has been ona steady decline over the last few decades, due to technologicaladvances and economic factors. In this study, panel data from 73countries were used for 23 years from 1991 to 2013 to analyze thefactors affecting energy intensity on a global level. Although there aremany differences, urbanization increases energy intensity, and asincome per capita increases, energy intensity decreases. The higher theconsumption rate of renewable energy, the higher the depreciationrate, the lower the energy intensity. When fossil fuel consumption islow, energy intensity increases, but as the ratio increases, energyintensity shows an inverted U-shape. The higher the proportion of fossilfuel rents in GDP, the higher the energy intensity.
