본 연구는 한국 프로야구 포스트시즌에서 상위시드 여부가 경기결과에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석에는 1989년부터 2024년까지 양대리그 체제로 운영된 시즌의 포스트시즌 경기만을 사용하였다. 분석결과는 다음 두 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 로짓모형 분석결과, 일부 라운드(와일드카드전·한국시리즈)에서 상위시드를 할당받은 팀의 승리 확률이 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 패널회귀모형 분석결과, 앞선 두 라운드에서 상위시드를 할당받는 것이 상대 팀보다 더 많은 득점을 하도록 하는 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 효과의 크기는 약 3점으로 추정되었다. 포스트시즌 경기 중 상당수가 3점 내외로 승패가 결정된다는 점을 고려할 때, 상위시드 여부는 경기결과에 실질적인 영향을 미치는 요인으로 해석될 수 있다. 결과적으로, 이는 가을야구의 주인공(한국시리즈 우승팀)이 상위시드 여부에 따라 상당 부분 좌우될 수 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the effect of seeding advantage on game outcomes in the Korean professional baseball postseason over the period 1989 to 2024, excluding the 1999 and 2000 seasons. The results show that seeding advantage increases the probability of winning in both the opening (Wild Card) and final (Korean Series) stages. In addition, seeded teams also tend to secure larger winning margins, with an estimated effect of about three runs. As many postseason games are decided within such margins, these findings suggest that seeding plays a decisive role in shaping postseason outcomes.
