한국프로야구 경기력 결정요인에 관한 실증분석

본 연구에서는 미국 MLB에서 성공적인 구단 운영을 한 오클랜드 As의 경영방법이 한국프로야구에서도 통할 수 있는지를 살펴보기 위하여 1996년 이후 2006년까지 한국프로야구 8개 팀의 패널자료를 이용하여 득점회귀방정식과 실점회귀방정식을 추정하였다. 특히 오클랜드 팀의 대표적인 두 가지 특징 (타자를 드래프트 및 트레이드시 출루율과 장타율 기록을 중시하며, 감독이 작전으로 선수들의 플레이를 통제하기 보다는 선수를 믿고 맡기는 야구)에 대하여 분석하였다. 추정 결과에 의하면 한국프로야구에서도 출루율과 장타율은 팀 득점에 영향을 주는 매우 중요한 요인이며, 출루율의 중요도가 장타율의 중요도에 비해 3배 이상 높은 것으로 추정되었다. 또한 감독의 작전야구가 팀 득점 및 실점에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 그 결과에 의하면 작전야구를 나타내는 대부분 변수가 팀 득점 및 실점에 부정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 추정되어 한국프로야구에서도 오클랜드 팀의 운영철학인 자율야구가 평균적으로 더 효과적인 결과를 낳는다는 추론을 얻을 수 있었다.
Abstract
This paper provides empirical evidences that Korean baseball is consistent to the implication of Moneyball in two respects. First, On Base Percentage (OBP) and Slugging Percentage(SP) are influencial factors to determine points earned, and one unit increase in OBP raises points earned per game three times more than the same unit increase in SP. Second, Small Ball which implies that team managers implement many strategies in players' games, is somewhat detrimental to team performance. Panel data models with both individual effects and time effects are applied to the panel data of 8 teams and 10 seasons in Korean professional baseball league, This paper also derives proxy variables to represent a degree of Small Ball based on available team records.
