본 현장보고서는 1989년도 경주시 건천읍 절골의 한지 제작과정을 기술하고 있다. 한지 생산은 전 과정을 장인이 손수 제작한다는 점에서 문화유산이라고 할 수 있다. 한지는 숙련된 기술자와 제작 기구, 양질의 닥나무 등이 어우러져야 생산된다. 한지는 원재료와 생산방법에 따라 서로 다른 용도로 사용될 뿐 아니라 다양한 방식으로 구분된다. 1989년 절골에서는 닥나무 껍질과 컴퓨터용 천공카드(OMR 카드)를 혼합하여 한지를 생산하고 있었다. 닥나무(껍질) 가격 상승이 그 원인이었다. 한지 제작은 공장이라 불리는 곳에서 개인별로 이루어지고 있었다. 1989년 조사 당시 절골에는 네 개의 공장이 있었다. 공장 사용료는 생산총액에 따라 일정한 비율로 지불하는 방식이었다. 한지의 원재료는 개인별로 구입하고, 제작과정 역시 개인별로 진행하고 있었다. 절골에서 한지 제작은 대개 부업이었지만, 일부는 전업으로 하고 있었다. 한지 제작자들은 벼농사, 포도 재배, 소 사육 등 다른 일을 병행하고 있었다.
Abstract
This is a research report on the production process of Hanji, that is Korean traditional paper, at Jeogol, Geoncheon-eup, Gyeongju-city, in 1989. Hanji is a cultural heritage for its technology using by the craftsman. It is a product of a combination of well established technologies, natural paper mulberry fiber and durable natural materials. Hanji has been called by many different names and used in various ways according to materials and production methods. But at Jeolgol in 1989, Hanji was made by hand with a mix of natural paper mulberry fibers and punch card pulps, due to the high cost of natural mulberry fibers. The process of Hanji production was conducted by every craftsman who worked in workshop and used its facilities owned by other man. There were four workshops at Jeolgol, in 1989. The user of workshop paid a usage fee based on his production output. Every craftsman bought raw materials, manufactured Hanji and sold it on an individual basis. The craftsmen of Hanji at Jeolgol were done this work, some as main job others on the side. Either of them done farming, including rice farming, vine growing, cow breeding and others.
