Abstract
This article examines Luca Guadagnino's early Desire Trilogy―I Am Love (2009), A Bigger Splash (2015), and Call Me by Your Name (2017)― through the lens of synesthetic aesthetics and an ontology of sensuality. Guadagnino's cinema reorganizes the spectator's relation to the world beyond a visual regime of representation, constructing a synesthetic network in which heterogeneous sensory elements―light, color, texture, food, sound, smell, temperature, and rhythm―continuously translate into and permeate one another. Rather than presenting desire as a psychological state or narrative motif, these f ilms formalize desire as a sensory movement that the viewer does not merely see but physically inhabits. The study conceptualizes synesthesia not as a decorative fusion of senses but as a transitive, embodied mode of perception in which the body thinks through sensory exchanges. Sensuality is understood as an affective condensation of sensory intensities―a moment in which sensation becomes a mode of bodily thought and ethical openness. The trilogy articulates three phases of sensory becoming: the birth, dissonance, and endurance of sensation. I Am Love depicts the awakening of a subject through a gustatory event that destabilizes a repressed sensorial order; A Bigger Splash stages desire as a field of sensory rupture, where the intrusion of strangers and the island's hostile climate intensify ethical ambiguity and alterity; Call Me by Your Name extends sensation into temporality, showing how sensory traces persist as memory, loss, and ethical reflection. Ultimately, the article argues that Guadagnino's sensual style is not a surface excess or erotic decoration but an embodied ontology in which sensory experience generates thought and reconfigures ethical relations. In doing so, it proposes synesthetic sensuality as a crucial philosophical horizon for contemporary film aesthetics.
