Abstract

This study aims to empirically compare generational patterns in the use of connective endings by analyzing a spoken corpus of the Jeolla dialect. For the analysis, utterances by speakers in their 50s–60s and 10s–20s were extracted from the larger Jeolla dialect corpus, followed by a log-likelihood-based keyword analysis to examine the distribution and forms of connective endings. Although the overall proportion of connective endings used across both generations is similar, there are notable differences in the diversity of types and the number of statistically significant keywords. The speech of older speakers exhibits a relatively broad and diverse range of connective endings, whereas younger speakers tend to concentrate their usage on a smaller set of forms. Nevertheless, dialectal variants such as ‘-aeseo’ still appear significantly in the speech of younger speakers, suggesting that the use of dialectal connective endings has not been entirely lost. This study demonstrates the methodological potential of corpus-based quantitative analysis in dialectology by offering insights into generational tendencies in language use, thereby complementing previous research that relied on a limited number of informants.
