초록

The study attempted to account for differential pragmatic development among graduate-level Korean non- native speakers of English as functions of their level of motivation, amount of contact with English as well as length of residence in the target community. Fifty Korean graduate students at an American university participated in the study. To measure the participants’ pragmatic competence of complimenting behavior in English, a written discourse completion test(DCT) was administered. Three research variables, motivation, amount of contact with English, and length of residence in the target community, were also investigated to measure the effect size on the participants' pragmatic competence level attained. The findings of the study provide that(a) the participants’ levels of motivation demonstrated a positive and significant relationship to their knowledge of giving compliments in English and(b) the amount of L2 contact and length of residence in the target community appeared to have an insignificant impact on the participants’ knowledge of compliments in English. These findings seem to imply that there are numerous individual characteristics influencing L2 pragmatic acquisition. Of them, how ready learners are cognitively and psychologically to seize the benefits of the learning opportunities offered is both crucial and complex
