존 웨슬리는 스스로를 ‘한 책의 사람’이라고 불리기를 원할 정도로 성서를 자신의 신앙과 신학의 원천이자 기준으로 삼았다. 그의 신학이 그렇듯이 그는 다양한 기독교적인 전통을 교파적인 당파성을 넘어 취사 선택적으로(eclectic) 자신의 신학에 수용하였다. 그의 신학의 핵심이라고 할 수 있는 성서해석에서도 특정한 한 전통만을 수용하였다고 할 수는 없으나, 독일경건주의자인 알브레히트 벵엘의 영향력에 대해서는 누구나 인정하는 바이다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 존 웨슬리가 벵엘을 알기 훨씬 이전에 독일 경건주의 성서해석학의 전범이라고 할 수 할 수 있는 A. H. 프랑케의『성서읽기 교본』(Manuductio ad Lectionem Scripturae Sacrae)을 읽었다는 사실에 주목하여, 그의 영향력과 성서해석학의 유사성에 대해서 탐구하였다. 이 부분은 많은 웨슬리 연구자들이 간과하는 부분이다. 아우구스트 헤르만 프랑케는 본격적인 역사비평적 성서해석이 등장하기 이전의 사람이다. 그러나 그의 성서해석학은 성서 언어와 역사적 배경에 관한 연구와 본문비평에 있어서는 비판적인 문헌학적-역사적 성서학의 발전에 기여하였고, 영감설과 실존적 적용과 신앙 각성을 위한 해석은 탈 역사적인 케리그마적인 해석의 길을 열었다. 그러나 이러한 양극단으로의 발전은 프랑케가 의도했던 바가 아니며, 그는 근본에 있어 양자를 통합하는 역사적-성령론적인 해석 (Die historistorisch-pneumatische Exegese)을 시도하였다. 그의 이러한 성서 해석학적 원리는 구체적으로 영감론 (Inspirationslehre), 신앙의 유비 (Analogia fidei), 감응론 (Affektenlehre), 실천적 성서읽기 (Lectio practica)에 잘 드러난다. 존 웨슬리 역시 성서의 영감설과 절대적인 권위를 인정하였지만, 결코 맹목적인 문자주의자 (blind biblist)는 아니었다. 본고는 먼저 A. H. 프랑케의『성서읽기 교본』의 성격과 이 책이 영국에 끼친 영향력에 대해서 살펴보고,『성서읽기 교본』에 나타난 해석학적인 원리들을 중심으로 존 웨슬리의 성서해석학과의 유사성을 고찰하였다. 이 유사성이 곧바로 전적으로 경건주의만의 영향이라고 말할 수는 없지만, 그가 직접 A. H. 프랑케의『성서읽기 교본』을 읽었다는 점과 이 책의 영향력을 받은 사람들의 성서해석 작품을 높이 평가하였다는 점에서 그 연관성을 결코 과소평가할 수 없다. 그리고 마지막으로 본고는 벵엘의『신약성서 지침서』 (Gnomon Novi Testamenti)가 존 웨슬리에 끼친 영향과 그 차이점을 고찰하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of German Pietism on John Wesley’s biblical hermeneutics. John Wesley wanted himself to be called “homo unius libri”(Man of One Book). The Bible was the most important source and norm of his faith and theological thinking. So, the biblical hermeneutics was the core of his theology. John Wesley was not a blind biblist, even though he believed the inspiration of the Bible. He accepted the results of the texutal criticism of his time. But the main purpose of his interpretation of the Bible was to awaken the believers and to make them to put their faith into practice. He was not much interested in the theoretical biblical hermeneutics. He identified himself a folk theologian, and his theology as a ‘Practical Divinity.’ It is comparatively well known that John Wesley was influenced by German Pietist, Johann Albrecht Bengel and his Gnomon Novi Testamenti. However, John Wesley had read A. H. Francke’s Manuductio ad Lectionem Scripturae Sacrae in his Oxford time before reading Bengel’s Gnomon. This fact has been overlooked by most Wesley researchers. The Manuductio which was introduced by Anton Wilhelm Böme, a German Pietist in London, received a great response in England. It was a normative introduction to the biblical hermeneutics of Pietism, which presented four principles of the interpretation of the Bible, namely “Inspirationslehre”, “Analogia fidei”, “Affecktenlehre”, “Lectio practica.” John Wesley was influenced by this Exegetical Method and showed the similarities with it.
