현대의 목회자들은 경건의 모양은 있으나 경건의 능력을 부인하는 자들과 같이 세상에 비추어지고 있다. 혹자는 18세기 영국 국교회 사제들보다 더 정치적이고, 세속적이고, 직업적이라고 현대 목회자들의 모습을 평가할지도 모른다. 이러한 상황은 목회자들이 초기부터 경건 훈련을 소홀히 하고 있기 때문이다. 18세기 세속정치와 오락에 심취하고 직업적으로 직무를 수행하던 영국 교회에 경건한 삶의 본이 되고 완전한 그리스도인의 삶을 살도록 영향력을 끼친 John Wesley는 어머니 Susanna Wesley의 가정교육, 성결한 모임을 결성, 경건 서적과의 만남, Aldersgate Street 집회 참여, 자기 성찰의 기도 등을 통하여 일평생 경건한 삶을 살뿐 아니라 많은 영향력을 끼친 목회자가 되었다. 본고에서는 Wesley의 경건한 삶에 영향을 끼친 요인들을 중심으로 현대 목회자들이 실천할 수 있는 경건 훈련 방안을 다음과 같이 제안하였다. 첫째, 목회자 가정에서 규칙적인 생활과 절제 훈련 등을 해산하는 고통을 겪는 심정으로 자녀들에게 실시해야 한다. 둘째, 성경을 읽을 때는 하나님을 의식하며 경외하는 마음으로 읽어야 하며, 창세기부터 요한계시록까지 차례대로 정기적으로 읽고, 내게 명령하시는 말씀으로 듣고, 순종하려는 자세로 읽어야 하며, 가족과 양 무리들에게 가르치려는 마음으로 실천의 본을 보이려는 자세로 읽고, 성경 읽기를 위한 모임을 구성하여 읽어야 하며, 눈을 열어 주의 율법의 놀라운 것을 보기를 원하는 마음으로 읽고, 육체의 소욕을 통해 받을 심판의 말씀을 주의하며 읽고, 경건한 삶을 주제로 설교와 성경공부에 관심을 갖고 읽어야 한다. 셋째, 개인적으로 매일 경건 서적을 읽을 시간과 장소를 정하여, 경건한 삶을 위한 실천 사항을 순수한 마음을 깨닫기를 기도하는 마음과 정독을 하는 습관을 갖고, 경건 훈련에 도움이 되는 주요 내용을 공격적으로 활용하고, 삶에서 열매로 맺어지기를 성령에 의탁하는 마음으로 기도하고, 목회자들과 경건 서적을 읽는 모임을 정기적으로 갖고 서로 깨달은 내용을 나누고, 토론하는 시간을 가져야 한다. 넷째, 자기 성찰과 회개 기도를 통하여 경건 훈련을 실시해야 한다. 기타 방법으로는 주재권이 분명해야 하며, 자족의 비결을 배우고, 육체의 소욕을 십자가에 못 박아야 하며, 마지막으로 경건 훈련을 위한 모임을 결성하는 방안이다.
Abstract
Contemporary pastors may look pious but are often seen together with those who deny the power of piety. Some might say that they are more political, secular, and professional than those of the 18th century English national church. This is because these pastors did not pay attention to piety training from the beginning. John Wesley became a model of pious life and had an influence over churches of England which were interested in secular politics, entertainment, and occupational engagement to live lives of sincere Christians in the 18th century. Education at home provided by his mother, Susanna Wesley, establishment of groups for holiness and purity, encounter with piety-related books, participation in the Aldersgate Street demonstration, prayers of self-reflection were the elements of his lifetime piety and the force which made him become a very influential pastor. The paper suggests the following ways for piety training to be conducted by contemporary pastors based on the factors which have affected piety in life of Wesley. First, families of pastors shall provide regular lives and self-control training to children with the utmost dedication. Second, when reading the Bible, we shall be conscious of and fear God, read from Genesis to Revelation regularly, listen to God's order, and maintain an attitude of obedience. We shall maintain an attitude of practice and teaching for families and establish groups to read the Bible. When reading, we shall open our eyes and pray to witness miracles of God's commandments, think of the words of the judgment to be given against physical desires, and take interest in sermons and the Bible. Third, time and place to read piety-related books personally shall be decided with a habit of praying and perusal. Also, we shall use information helpful for piety training aggressively and pray that this results in fruition in our lives with our dependence on the Holy Spirit. At the same time, we shall have regular chances to read piety-related books with pastors ad discuss our realization. Fourth, piety training shall be conducted through self-reflection and repentance. As for others, we should maintain clear ownership, learn about the secrets of self-sufficiency, render physical desires to the cross, and finally, set up a group for piety training.
