Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore gifted and general elementary school students' possible selves based on the concept of ‘Possible Selves’ suggested by Markus and Nurius(1986). Specifically, this study focused on the similarities and differences of possible selves in both groups of students. To achieve this purpose, 80 gifted 5th grade students and 80 general 5th grade students were asked to fill out an open-ended questionnaire used by Oyserman & Markus(1990) to elicit information about their possible selves. Inductive method and consensual qualitative analytic method were applied on these narrative data. The research findings were as follows: First, related to the ‘hoped for selves’ of the gifted, 504 responses which were 2.9 times more than the ones of the general students were obtained in categories such as good career, entering good school or college, financial success, intellectual curiosity/passion, humanity, family strength, leisure, honor, self-satisfaction, personal relations, health, leadership, and careful concern and so on. Second, among the ‘fearful selves’, ‘perfectionism’ and ‘social contribution’ and ‘humanity’ were often addressed by the gifted, where as those responses were not found in general students. In addition, ‘fear of the failure/anxiety’and ‘future personal relations’ related to the fearful selves were significantly higher than the general. Implications of the study related to the gifted education were discussed.
