Abstract

This paper explores how Yves Klein reveals nothingness or emptiness “as it is,” which cannot be represented by traditional artistic methods, by focusing on his artistic experiments that put this into practice through visual, auditory, and spatial devices and their aesthetic significance. Aristotle, in his Poetics, defines tragedy as an imitation of human action and emphasizes causality and probability as its structural principles, grounded in a strong belief in the author as the subject of representation. Drawing upon Zen Buddhist thought, however, Klein understands nothingness as the source of all existence and centers his artistic practice on manifesting its invisible and immaterial nature. In his “Blue Monochrome” (1957), Klein visually materializes the infinite depth and empty space of nothingness through the color blue. “The Anthropometry” (1960) reveals the auditory and physical dimensions of nothingness through silence and traces of the body, presented in the form of performance. Meanwhile, “The Void” (1958) presents an empty exhibition space, framing the void not merely as absence but as a place imbued with a sacred spiritual atmosphere. In conclusion, blue serves as a sensory mediator visualizing infinity, silence opens up an auditory space entirely devoid of the artist’s intervention, and the void confronts the viewer directly with immaterial presence. Through these strategies of revelation spanning painting, music, performance, and even architecture, Klein artistically realizes a conception of nothingness as an infinite field of creation, freed from traditional artistic constraints of balance and order.
