그림문자 파닉스를 활용한 초등영어 학습부진 지도 사례 연구

초록

본 연구는 그림문자 파닉스 지도가 초등학교 영어학습 부진 학생의 읽기 능력과 정의적 특성에 미친 영향을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 그림문자 그리기를 주된 활동으로 하는 방과후 파닉스 지도 프로그램에 10주 동안 참여한 4~5학년 학생 4인을 대상으로 심층적인 사례연구를 수행하였다. 프로그램을 통해 학생들의 읽기 능력 및 정의적 영역에서 어떠한변화가 있었는지 알아보기 위해 다각적으로 자료를 수집하고자 하였으며, 읽기 검사, 설문, 면담, 교수일지로부터 얻어진 자료를 양적, 질적으로 분석하였다. 연구의 결과, 그림문자 파닉스 프로그램을 통해 참여 학생들의 기초적인 읽기 능력이 대폭향상되었음을 알 수 있었다. 철자 읽기, 음소 인식, 해독, 일견어휘 읽기, 교과서 단어 읽기의 모든 영역에서 상당한 폭의 발전이 있었다. 학생들의 정의적 영역에서도 긍정적인 변화가 확인되었다. 영어 학습에 대한 자신감과 흥미는 높아졌으며, 영어 수업에 대한 불안감은 감소하였다. 또한, 학생들은 프로그램에 대한 만족도와 자신의 참여도에 대해서 긍정적으로 평가하였는데, 그림문자의 도움으로 철자의 모양과 소리, 연관 단어의 의미를 쉽게 학습하고 기억할 수 있었다고 보고하였다.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the effects of remedial phonics instruction using pictorial typography on elementary English underachievers’ reading abilities and affective characteristics. To this end, the researchers conducted an in-depth case study of four 4th graders and 5th graders who participated in an after-school phonics program with pictorial typography as a main activity for 10 weeks. Data were collected for tests of word reading, questionnaires, interviews, and teaching journals to examine student progress in reading and affective domain through multiple sources. The findings indicated that the four students made considerable progress in basic reading skills. They showed significant improvement in performances of all sub-skill areas of reading, including letter naming, phonemic awareness, decoding, sight word reading, and textbook word reading. The students also reported increased confidence and interest in English learning as well as a lower level of anxiety over English study. Also, they reported positive evaluation on the program and their participation, saying that they were better able to recognize and recall the shapes and sounds of letters and the meanings of related words with the help of pictorial typography.
