Abstract
This study empirically examined how character identification and content flow influence Generation Z viewers' electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) intention in China, focusing on <K-pop Demon Hunters>, which achieved over 50 million cumulative views on the Bilibili platform despite the Korean Wave restrictions. The study conceptualized the multidimensional attributes of animation characters as character attractiveness, visual originality, and narrative empathy, applying Cohen's (2001) identification theory and Csikszentmihalyi's (1990) flow theory. The results are as follows. First, regarding the impact of character attributes on character identification, narrative empathy and visual originality showed significant positive effects, but character attractiveness was not statistically significant, contrary to expectations. This suggests that Chinese Generation Z feels deeper psychological integration through inner worlds, growth narratives, and cultural identity expression via differentiated visuals rather than simple physical attractiveness. Second, among character attributes affecting content flow, only narrative empathy was significant, while character attractiveness and visual originality did not show significant effects. This indicates that the power of emotional engagement, which directly transports viewers into the narrative world through characters' emotional journeys and internal conflicts, is much stronger than external stimuli. Third, both character identification and content flow were confirmed to have significant effects on eWOM intention, with content flow showing relatively stronger influence than character identification. Fourth, mediation analysis revealed that narrative empathy showed significant mediating effects through all pathways via character identification and content flow, while visual originality was significant only through the character identification pathway. This study demonstrates the complex process by which multidimensional attributes of animation characters are converted into eWOM intention through the differential psychological mechanisms of identification and flow, suggesting the necessity of narrative-centered character development strategies for Korean animation entering the Chinese market. In particular, it confirmed the effectiveness of strategies that deeply construct characters' internal conflicts and emotional journeys, and reinterpret the concerns faced by the youth generation in reality through a fantasy worldview.
