Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore how choreographers in Korea utilize numbers during the dance creation process and to examine the artistic and method ological potential of number-based choreography. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with five choreographers who had experience employing numeri cal systems in their creative processes, and choreographic notes provided by the participants were used as analytical data. The analysis revealed that numbers func tion not merely as counting units, but as a creative language that structures move ment sequence, tempo, repetition, and spatial composition. In addition, numeri cal cueing facilitated communication among choreographers and collaborators, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the rehearsal process. Furthermore, number- based approaches supported creative exploration, strengthened dancers’ sense of rhythm and temporal awareness, and enabled more effective documentation and reproduction of choreographic structures. These findings suggest that the use of numbers in choreography represents a meaningful methodological approach that integrates intuitive creativity with structural thinking and expands the expressive and educational possibilities of dance.
