Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the martial arts view of Ajeong Lee Deok-mu as shown in the compilation of MuyeDobotongji. As is well known, Lee Deok-mu was a member of the Bukhak School. In 1778 (the second year of King Jeongjo's reign), he accompanied the secretary Sim Yeom-jo to Qing China, where he interacted with leading scholars such as Gi Gyun, Ban Jeong-gyun, Lee Jo-won, and Lee Jeong-won. He also became famous as one of the four inspectors of Gyujanggak along with Park Je-ga, Yu Deuk-gong, and Seo I-su. During his tenure, he actively participated in the compilation of Kyujanggak books, organizing and editing many books, including Doseojipseong(圖書集成), GukjoBogam(國朝寶鑑), DaejeonTongpyeon(大全通編), Gyujanggakji(奎章閣志), Hongmungwanji(弘文館志), and GyujangJeonun(奎章全韻). In particular, in 1790 (the 14th year of King Jeongjo's reign), he participated in the compilation of the "MuyeDobotongji" together with Park Je-ga and Baek Dong-su by order of King Jeongjo. His view on martial arts can be seen in the draft of the "Muye Dobotongji" and the "MuyeDobotongji Bujinseol" that he submitted. First, as Lee Deok-mu revealed in the preface to MuyeDoboTongji, it explains in detail the etymology and style of Muye Dobo Tongji, the use of weapons, the mechanical diagrams of each country, detailed illustrations of each weapon, and explanations that anyone can easily learn, as well as the basis for each weapon material and each weapon posture. In addition, he explains in detail in “MuyeDoboTongji Bujinseol” the contents that were not revealed in the legend. He emphasized not only the status of “MuyeDoboTongji” in military books, but also that “MuyeDoboTongji” is a practical martial art with practical use, and that “MuyeDoboTongji” was compiled from a practical point of view based on the degree of famous objects, a field of textual criticism.
