빈곤이 아동의 우울․불안에 미친 영향 : 빈곤의 기간 및 시기, 정도에 따른 차이를 중심으로

본 연구는 한국청소년패널 초4패널 자료(2838사례)를 활용하여 빈곤이 아동의 우울불안에 미친 영향과 빈곤의 영향이 기간과 시간, 정도에 따라 다르게 나타나는가를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 빈곤은 아동의 우울불안에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 빈곤 기간과 시점에 따라 다른 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 아동이 장기간에 걸쳐 연속적인 빈곤을 경험할수록, 보다 초기에 빈곤을 경험할수록, 그리고 빈곤의 정도가 심할수록 우울불안에 대한 빈곤의 영향이 강하게 나타났다. 이러한 본 연구의 결과는 빈곤 가족 아동의 우울불안 문제를 해결하기 위한 사회적 지원이 필요하며, 특히 이러한 지원은 장기적이고, 극심한 빈곤을 경험하고 있는 가족에 집중될 필요가 있음을 보여주었다.
Abstract
This study assesses the effect on child's depression and anxiety of poverty taking account also of both duration and timing. The source of our data was the Korea Youth Panel Survey 2004(Primary School 4). Our results indicate that duration and timing of poverty have a statistically significant association with depression and anxiety. More specifically, the longer the duration of poverty and the earlier in childhood that poverty occurs both negatively impact upon depression and anxiety. Moreover, it was found that extreme poverty negatively affects depression and anxiety. The findings from this study suggest that social support for poor families contributes to helping resolve depression and anxiety. In particular, these support mechanisms should be focused on the duration of poverty, the early onset of childhood poverty, and the poverty experienced by extremely poor families.
