이 연구는 관계대명사 “who,” “which,” “that”의 사용을 문어체와 구어체 영어에서 조사하며, 문맥이 대명사 선택에 미치는 영향을 중점적으로 다룬다. 공식적인 영어 문어체 200문장과 일상적인 영어 구어체 200문장으로 구성된 400개의 문장을 분석하여 문체에 따른 대명사 사용의 유의미한 차이를 확인하였다. 연구 결과, 공식적인 문어체에서는 “who”와 “which”가 강하게 선호되는 반면, 구어체 영어에서는 특히 무생물 선행사와 함께 “that”이 더 자주 사용되었다. 카이제곱 검정과 이항 검정을 사용하여 이러한 차이의 유의성을 평가했으며, Cramér의 V 값을 통해 문맥과 대명사 선택 간의 연관성 강도를 측정했다. 결과에 따르면, “who”와 “that”의 경우 Cramér’s V = 0.28로 중간 정도의 연관성을 보였으며, “which”와 “that”의 경우 Cramér’s V = 0.53로 더 강한 연관성을 나타냈다. 이는 문맥이 관계대명사 선택에서 중요한 역할을 한다는 점을 확인해준다. 이러한 결과는 언어 이론과 영어 교육 모두에 중요한 시사점을 제공하며, 문맥에 민감한 문법 지도를 학습자들에게 강조할 필요성을 부각시킨다.
Abstract
This study examines the usage of the relative pronouns “who,” “which,” and “that” in both written and spoken English, focusing on how context influences pronoun choice. Through a corpus-based analysis of 400 sentences—200 from formal written English and 200 from casual spoken English—the study identifies significant differences in pronoun usage across registers. The findings reveal that in formal written contexts, “who” and “which” are strongly preferred, reflecting a need for clarity and precision. In contrast, spoken English shows a greater reliance on “that,” particularly with inanimate antecedents, highlighting the more versatile and economical nature of spoken language. Statistical analyses, including chi-square and binomial tests, were used to assess the significance of these differences. Additionally, Cramér’s V was calculated to measure the strength of association between context and pronoun choice. The results suggest a moderate association for “who” vs. “that” (Cramér's V = 0.28) and a stronger association for “which” vs. “that” (Cramér's V = 0.53), confirming that context plays a crucial role in relative pronoun selection. These findings have important implications for both linguistic theory and English language pedagogy, underscoring the need to teach context-sensitive grammar to learners.
