Abstract

Background The current waste disposal system suffers from structural limitations in which complex separation rules and insufficient incentive schemes diminish motivation for recycling, thereby shifting the burden of collection and sorting onto sanitation workers. To address these issues, this study proposes the GreenTruck system, which integrates autonomous driving and AI-based waste classification technologies, and evaluates its acceptance and effectiveness among key stakeholder groups. Methods Two video-based scenarios reflecting the distinct characteristics of waste disposers and sanitation workers were designed to allow participants to indirectly experience the actual usage context. A survey was then conducted with 30 waste disposers and 17 sanitation workers, comparing their perceptions of the current recycling system and the GreenTruck system. The collected data were analyzed using independent-sample t-tests to examine differences between the two systems, and Pearson correlation analysis to explore relationships among variables. Qualitative responses were additionally interpreted through content analysis. Result Waste disposers reported statistically significant positive responses across all dimensions, including usability, technology acceptance, and user experience, compared to the current system. In particular, satisfaction with the incentive and feedback mechanisms improved substantially, reinforcing participation motivation. In contrast, sanitation workers positively evaluated work efficiency and reductions in physical and emotional strain, but their technology acceptance remained relatively low. These findings suggest that concerns over job insecurity and gaps in AI literacy acted as major inhibitory factors. Conclusion This study empirically demonstrates the potential of the GreenTruck system to promote recycling participation among waste disposers and to alleviate physical and emotional burdens on sanitation workers. The findings highlight its academic contribution as a design-oriented alternative to address structural limitations of the current recycling system. However, the low technology acceptance observed among sanitation workers—stemming from job insecurity and limited AI literacy—indicates that technical advancements alone may not suffice. Therefore, future implementation requires not only long-term validation in real operational settings but also complementary measures such as awareness programs, employment security strategies, and institutional safeguards.
