이 연구는 한국적 목회돌봄의 특성에 대한 탐구이다. 북미에서는 목회돌봄의 의미와 역할이 공동ㄹ체적 상황적 패러다임으로 진행되었고, 이러한 변화를 제시한 존 패튼의 책이 한국에 소개된지 20년이 지났다. 그러나 한국 교회의 목회돌봄은 여전히 고전적 패러다임의 특성이 강하며, 임상 목회적 패러다임이 활발히 진행되는 가운데 평신도 목회돌봄사역자의 역할은 조명 받지 못하고 있다. 그리스도인의 신앙공동체가 세상을 향해 목회돌봄을 수행한다는 패튼의 공동체적 상황적 패러다임은 한국적 상황에서 어떻게 진행되고 있는가? 이러한 질문에 대한 답을 찾기 위해 이 연구는 공동체적 상황적 패러다임을 이루는 평신도의 목회돌봄 형태가 한국 상황에서는 어떻게 실천되고 있는지 살펴보고 신학적 성찰을 진행했다. 이를 위해 필자는 평신도가 주축이 된 목회돌봄 신학의 필요성을 제시하였고, 한국 문화에서 평신도가 주체가 되어 목회돌봄을 수행한 세 사례로 개신교 형성 초기의 서서평 선교사, 1980년대의 원종수 권사, 그리고 2020년대의 한 평신도의 사례를 탐구하였다. 사례를 분석하기 위해 미로슬라브 볼프의 포옹의 신학, 기독교 영성의 환대 개념, 그리고 도널드 위니컷의 안아주기 개념과 대화를 시도하였다. 이 연구는 평신도가 주체가 되어 수행되어 온 한국적 목회 돌봄의 특성을 희생이나 헌신의 개념이 아닌 자기 내어줌과 안아주기의 신학적 개념과 연관하여 제시하였다. 세 명의 사례는 타자를 위해 내면의 중심을 내어주고 기꺼이 시간과 물질과 육체를 소진하면서 겸손히 환대하여 연결된 삶을 이루는 평신도 목회돌봄의 실제를 조명하였다. 자기 내어줌과 안아주기의 실천은 급변하는 한국의 근현대 역사에서 정치적 폭압, 굶주림, 소외와 외로움으로 고통 받는 사회를 향한 공동체적 상황적 목회돌봄의 한국적 특성이다. 이 연구는 평신도를 목회돌봄의 주체로 세우기 위한 실천의 여정에 이정표이자 평신도 돌봄 교육을 위한 자료로서 역할 할 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
This research explores the characteristics of pastoral care in a Korean context. In North America, the meaning and role of pastoral care have evolved into a communal-contextual paradigm, and it has been 20 years since John Patton's book, which proposed these changes, was introduced to Korea. However, pastoral care in Korean churches still predominantly exhibits characteristics of the classical paradigm; the clinical paradigm actively progresses, while the role of lay pastoral caregivers remains obscure. How does Patton's communal-contextual paradigm, which suggests that Christian communities perform pastoral care worldwide, unfold in the Korean context? To answer this question, this study examines how the forms of pastoral care led by laypersons are practiced in Korea and offers theological reflections. To achieve this, the author suggests the necessity of pastoral theology centered around laypersons and investigates three cases of pastoral care led by laypersons in Korean culture: Elisabeth Johanna Shepping, a missionary during the formation of Korean Protestantism; Won Jongsu in the 1980s; and a layperson from the 2020s. To analyze these cases, the study attempts a dialogue between Miroslav Volf's theology of embrace, the concept of Christian hospitality, and Donald Winnicott's notion of holding. The research highlights two characteristics of Korean pastoral care led by laypersons: self-giving and holding. The three cases illustrate lay pastoral care that selflessly extends inner resources, time, material, and physical efforts in humble hospitality, fostering connected lives. The practice of self-giving and holding embodies the communal-contextual aspect in modern Korean history of pastoral care towards a society undergoing rapid changes and experiencing political oppression, hunger, alienation, and loneliness. This study is expected to serve as a milestone in the journey toward raising up laypersons as the primary agents of pastoral care.
