Four types of pastoral care can be identified in the Protestant Korean church. Paternal pastoral care was provided by male clergy. Its functions included support, protection, and guidance. Midwifery pastoral care, which was offered by female clergy, helped and empowered the Christian women endure the miserable situation. Prophetic pastoral care mainly offered by Christian scholars and theologians took care of the oppressed minjung. And mutual pastoral care is a type of care among the laity. The contemporary sense of pastoral care and counseling have rapidly grown by the scholars who studied abroad and returned Korea since 1990. They contributed for the development and growth of pastoral care and counseling by offering pastoral counseling courses in the seminary, raising pastoral counseling specialists, and exploring Korean pastoral theology and counseling. On the other hand, the emergence of new contexts including the multi-cultural society ask for new tasks to pastoral care and counseling which include professionalized care, forgiveness and reconciliation, and embrace and hospitality.
