식민지 시기 『지킬 박사와 하이드 씨』의 수용 -『쩨클과 하이드』(1921)의 번역 양상과 의미를 중심으로

Abstract

This article aimed at analyzing the way of translation of the novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(1921), translated by Mrs. Underwood, and it’s historical meaning. For this purpose, I collected Stevenson’s translated literature during the colonial period and after independence of Joseon as a basic texts. The next step to analyse the way of translation and it’s meaning of Dr. Jekyell and Mr. Hyde, I examined these texts in multidimensional focus. First, this article investigated the translation situation in China and Japan, and confirmed the concurrency of adoption in these East Asia’s three countries. Also, by looking at the channels on which The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were imported in film form, I suggested the relationship between film censorship and translation at that time. Second, I analyzed the translation methods of Dr. Jekyell and Mr. Hyde, which are the main interests of this paper. For confirming the attitude of Mrs. Underwood on Dr. Jekyell and Mr. Hyde’s translation, I assumed this text was translated in direct from the original one and compare this original text with four other contemporary korean translation versions. Mrs. Underwood avoid using Chinese characters as possible and tried to use Hangeul. In particular, this article highlighted and analyzed in detail, a way of translation which Western idioms were translated into familiar forms to the readers of Jeseon for their understanding. In addition, it was revealed that the translation method was not limited to a ‘selected translation’, but was a combination of various methods. Third, I examined the meaning of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the literary field of colonial Joseon. In the early 1920s, ‘evolution’ and ‘progress’ were used without distinction. And advances in science and technology made people imagine reaching the civilized world. But as seen in Hyde’s collapse, I interpreted it as a novel suggested the possibility that the outcome of evolution could not be a narrative of salvation in ultimate. Thus in this study I analyzed the linguistic characteristics that appeared in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde translated by Mrs. Underwood and the embodied translation method, and then identified the meaning of the translation text through the context of the times.
