게이티드 커뮤니티의 공간적 특성과 사회문화적 함의: 한국의 수용양상에서의 보편성과 특수성

초록

서구에서 처음 등장한 게이티드 커뮤니티는 각 지역의 사회․문화적 맥락에 맞게 선택적으로 채택되어 세계 각지의 도시공간에서 확산되고 있다. 본 연구는 인류학적 관점으로 서구 및 국내 학계에서 게이티드 커뮤니티를 다룬 문헌연구를 수행하고, 한국의 상황과 비교하여 국내에서 게이티드 커뮤니티로분류 가능한 주거단지 형태들을 제시한다. 게이티드 커뮤니티의 주요 특징은 ‘빗장지르기(gating)를 통한공간분리 기제’와 ‘공동체적 요소’ 그리고 이들에 의한 ‘새로운 장소성의 구축’으로 요약되며, 국내에서이러한 특징을 갖춘 주거단지로는 초고층 주상복합아파트와 타운하우스, 대형 고급아파트 단지가 있다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 국내에서 게이티드 커뮤니티의 공간문법이 적용된 주거단지가 확산되는 현상을 이해하는 데 있어 한국의 사회․문화적 맥락에 대한 고려가 중요함을 강조하였고, 앞으로의 변화양상으로고급아파트 단지의 영향력 증가를 전망한다.

Abstract

The gated community appeared in the West was adopted and increased in many countries shifting its form in accordance with their socio-cultural context. Based upon the literature review, this article throws theories about gated communities in the Western and Korea and suggests the residential forms, for example, hight-rise apartment, townhouse and upscale apartment complex,as gated communities in Korea. The three main features of gated community are ‘spatial separation through gating’, ‘the formation of community’ and ‘the construction of new placeness’. In the end,I propose the consideration of Korean socio-cultural context be important to understand the expansion of habitation applied the spacio-grammar of gated community in Korea.
