본 연구는 미국을 중심으로 북미·남미와 아시아·유럽·오세아니아 등에 나타나고 있는 글로벌 현상 중 하나인 폐쇄적 공동체의 성립배경과 유형에 대하여 고찰한 것이다. 분석결과, 폐쇄적 공동체는 뉴욕의 씨 게이트가 최초의 것이며, 이는 범죄의 공포로부터 벗어나 쾌적한 주거환경을 확보하려는 중류층 이상의 소득층을 중심으로 확산되고 있다. 그리고 폐쇄적 공동체는 커뮤니티의 특성에 따라 라이프스타일 공동체·프레스티지 공동체·안전지대 공동체의 세 유형으로 대별되며, 미국의 경우는 라이프스타일 공동체가 가장 선호되고 있다.
Abstract
This study investigates the developmental backgrounds and types of the gated communities which seem to be one of the global phenomena observed mainly in United States as well as in Asia , Europe, Oceania and Africa. The findings are as follows: The first gated community was Sea Gate in New York. Afterward, gated community was spreading out into upper middle classes in order to obtain more comfortable residential environment without external crime threats. It can be classified into three different types of gated community such as lifestyle community, prestige community, and security zone community. Lifestyle community is the most preferable for Americans among three of them.
