본 논문은 서사의 구성, 의제 설정과 논지의 전개, 증인과 자료의 활용이라는 크게 세 가지 측면에서 다큐멘터리 <건국전쟁>의 영화적 전략을 분석한 연구의 결과물이다. 첫째, 이 작품은 크게 다섯 개의 시퀀스로 이루어져 있으며, 각 시퀀스는 주로 중추적 인물과 이를 둘러싼 시공간적 배경을 토대로 서사를 구성한다. 그리고 이를 통해, 우리 민족이 암울한 시대를 지나 독립을 되찾고 대한민국 정부를 세워 전쟁의 위기를 극복하여 현재의 발전과 번영을 이루게 된 요인을 ‘이승만’이라는 인물과 연결시킨다. 둘째, 이 작품은 이승만을 향한 반감이나 저평가의 기저에 자리해 온 그를 둘러싼 오해와 사실 관계의오류를 해소한다는 명목을 전면에 내건다. 이로 인해 기존의 오해나 오류 또는 의혹과 의문 등에 강력히 대항하기 위해 의제를 설정하여 주장을 개진하는 과정에서 임의성과 자의성을 다분히 노출시킨다. 셋째, 이 작품은 주장을 강화하기 위해 나름의 증언 방식을 채택하는데, 특징적인 것은 증언을 행하는 사람들의 수가 많고 그 구성이 다양하다는 점이다. 뿐만 아니라, 이 작품은 자막의 사용 빈도와 분량을 높이면서 이전에 발굴 혹은 검토되지 않았던 자료들을 내놓고 그것들에 객관성을 부여하며 영화 속 ‘증언’을 위력을 강화하려 한다. 이를 바탕으로 다큐멘터리 영화 <건국전쟁>은 상업적 흥행을 거두고 사회적 반향을 일으키게 되었으나, 정치적 편향성을 강하게 드러내고 상대 진영의 주장과 논리를 불신 또는 부정하는 양상을 표출시킴으로써 또 다른 논란을 낳기도 하였다.
Abstract
In this paper, I analyzed the strategy of The Birth of Korea as a documentary film from three major aspects: narrative structure, agenda and logic, and witness and reference. First, the film is largely composed of five sequences. Each sequence constructs a narrative based on a main character and a spatiotemporal setting. Second, the film was produced with the intention of clearing up the misunderstandings and factual errors surrounding Syngman Rhee that have been the basis of antipathy and underestimation of him. Third, the film emphasizes its message by utilizing numerous witnesses and various forms of testimony, by increasing the frequency and length of subtitles, and by uncovering and introducing references. The Birth of Korea achieved commercial success and social resonance. However, the film also sparked controversy by revealing strong political bias and presenting one-sided arguments.
