Abstract

This study explores the foreign relations and relic diplomacy of archaeology in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). After its establishment, the PRC developed archaeological theories and practices rooted in Marxism through close exchanges with Soviet experts. However, with growing tensions with the Soviet Union, the PRC entered a new phase of diplomacy, and Chinese archaeology had to adapt accordingly. Following the Sino-Soviet split, Chinese archaeologists focused on developing domestic human and technical resources, in line with the party-state’s emphasis on “selfreliance.” This also included the promotion of “mass archaeology,” which encouraged public participation in archaeological practices. Furthermore, in alignment with its solidarity with the Third World and other socialist countries, as directed by the party-state, China’s archaeologists worked closely with their North Korean and Albanian counterparts. However, this solidarity often failed to yield significant results when it conflicted with the nation’s internal interests. Despite the political turmoil during the Cultural Revolution (1966–76), archaeological activities continued, albeit at a slower pace. The archaeological findings from this period were later showcased through two major exhibitions in the 1970s. These exhibitions not only played a significant role in China’s new diplomacy with nonsocialist countries, which began with the US-China détente in the early 1970s, but also presented the Marxist archaeological achievements and theories of the PRC to the outside world. While these exhibitions and knowledge exchanges often attracted criticism for the political nature of Chinese archaeology, they also served as an opportunity for mutual understanding among foreign observers.
