Abstract

In the 1920s and 1930s, typists—alongside telephone operators, bus conductors, and clerical workers in banks and companies—emerged as emblematic figures of young women with secondary education entering the modern workforce. While typists were broadly classified as office workers, their engagement with newly introduced “machines” distinguished them from other clerical employees, underscoring the technological specificity of their labor. The gradual spread of literacy through modern education among the colonized population enabled women to seek forms of work beyond agricultural and factory labor. The phenomenon of women’s becoming typists became increasingly widespread and socially recognized in the 1930s. As their numbers grew, public attention turned to the issues that accompanied this occupation—as a job, as a means of livelihood, and as a repetitive form of labor. Following Korea’s liberation, the steady rise in women’s educational attainment made typing skills an essential qualification for female job seekers. This study examines the labor and lived experiences of women typists, belong to the emerging middle-class occupations, and explores how they were represented in modern Korean literature. In works such as Jayubuin, female typists have often been represented through an emphasis on sexuality, while their identities as workers have been erased or obscured. However, attention should also be given to literary works that diverge from this dominant tendency—those that illuminate the socio-structural context of becoming a typist and the lived sensibility of typist labor. This study therefore focuses on Lee Tae-jun’s Ttal samhyeongje, Yeom Sang-seop’s Saeoulim, Jipyeongseon and Son Jang-soon’s Jeungeun, this paper analyzes the socio-structural context of “becoming-typist” and the distinctive sensibility of female clerical labor. By reconstructing the historical experience of women typists, this study underscores the need for close attention to the agency, resilience, and sensibility of ordinary, static, and often unorganized female office workers whose lives have long remained at the margins of literary and labor history.
