Abstract

This thesis explores the specificity and potential of artistic resistance against state violence and historical distortion by analyzing the archive-based works of contemporary Filipino artist Kiri Dalena (b. 1975) through the lens of Georges Didi-Huberman's Atlas methodology. Influenced by the legacy of Filipino resistance art, such as Social Realism from the 1970s and 80s, Dalena resists power through socially engaged art. In particular, her works <Erased Slogans> and <Trap for a Bird> revitalize images of suppressed popular uprisings and construct an active counter-archive. <Erased Slogans> performs the paradoxical practice of digitally removing slogans from photographs of popular uprisings taken before and after the Marcos regime's Martial Law. This act dismantles the authority of the archive and focuses attention on the gestures (bodily movements) of the people, thereby propelling the latent potential of the uprising. <Trap for a Bird> intervenes in the photographic archive of Dean Worcester, an American colonial official, to expose the narrative of racial hierarchy and division constructed by the colonial gaze. This Atlas-like practice transforms the archive from a fixed body of knowledge into a field of possibility that can be continuously reinterpreted. This practice suggests the potential for future popular uprisings and the possibility of decolonial solidarity within Asia, even as dictatorial history threatens to repeat itself in the present.
