Abstract
Dante follows Virgilio his guide through hell and purgatory, leaving the world of darkness behind and walking uphill through a long cave. Through the round hole at the end of the cave, they saw beautiful things in the sky, and when they came completely out of the cave, they could again see the stars in the sky. Just before dawn, the sky had already turned blue, but the stars were still shining. Purgatory begins with the two poets seeing the stars again after completing their journey through hell. The characteristic of purgatory is that change is achieved through repentance and prayer. This change is a new beginning, just as Virgil kneels with Dante, collects pure morning dew in his hands and washes Dante's dirty face, breaks a reed (a symbol of humility) and ties it around his waist, emphasizing purity. Something that is considered good carries a big impact. At the beginning of Purgatory, when Virgil breaks a reed to give to Dante, a new shoot immediately grows from the spot and is 'reborn, starting over', implying a miracle. God gave love to humans. Love, like gravity, is an unstoppable law of life. Love does not simply mean ‘emotion’ but ‘the law of existence’. At the same time, God gave humans freedom. Humans are always allowed to make choices of their own ‘free will.’ He can choose between good and evil, and even those who choose to do evil can be forgiven through sincere repentance. Because God loves humans infinitely. Purgatory is a place of purification through true repentance. It is a place where extreme penance and prayer receive forgiveness for wrongdoings, giving people hope.
