Abstract

This paper examines a puzzling series of sound changes: Old English Breaking and Anglian Smoothing. Past segmental or representational approaches to these sound changes do not explain why opposite sound changes such as breaking and smoothing tend to recur in the environment of consonants /x, r, l/ in the history of English. It is argued that the solution to this problem lies in the proper phonetic understanding of the particular sequence 'V + /x, r, l/,' whose gestural configuration involves two consecutive vowel gestures within a rhyme. It is also argued that OE Breaking and Anglian Smoothing are opposite results of an oscillation between different ways of parsing the ambiguous raw phonetic substance of the sequence 'V + /x, r, l/.' This paper also presents a natural account of both processes with a combination of the enriched theory of representation reflecting temporal relations of the complex segments and the Obligatory Contour Principle.
