Abstract

The decade 1980s has an important implication in the history of Homiletics in the Korean Presbyterian Church. During this period in the Korean Presbyterian Church, just like the drift in the liturgical studies, the theologians of practical theology also showed interest in Homiletics moving away from simply translating or introducing the books of foreign homileticians of the previous period. And it was that time when Korean homileticians began to publish their own books on homiletics, revealing the distinct theological characteristics of each Korean presbyterian denomination. During this period, KeunWon Park of the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK) asserted ‘evangelical sermon’ and ‘oikumene sermon’ that focus on the whole of human life, and an ‘open sermon’ that approaches everyone. Furthermore he emphasized balance between preaching and sacraments, and importance of incarnational preaching and contextual preaching. ChangBok Chung of the Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK) strongly criticized the preachers for wrapping personal thoughts in the sermons. He emphasized the idea of ​​carrying Song-on as the sermon’s ethos and insisted on the use of the church calendar as well as the daily Bible routine. He stressed the importance of congregation as a sermon partner and presented an analytical sermon model as a model for biblical sermons. He further emphasized the role of the Holy Spirit in his sermons. SungKoo Chung of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Korea (GAPCK) insisted on Homiletics based on conservative Reformation theology and asserted the kind of preaching that harmonizes the text and the context. He also strongly emphasized imitating Calvin as the best expository preacher. All these homileticians have common features that follow the heritages of the first practical theology professor, Charles Allen Clark, and all of them know the importance of congregation and contexts. However, despite the fact that they shared few common features, their positions on homiletics were much different depending on their denominations’ theological positions, such as progressive, holistic, and conservative. Through this study, it can be seen that the field of Korean Presbyterian homiletics has been differentiated with varying emphasis depending on one’s own theological position since the 1980s.
