초록

The Austen craze that continues into the 21st century stems not only from the original novels, but also from modern adaptations such as the 1995 BBC drama Pride and Prejudice. Shannon Hale’s 2007 popular fiction Austenland shows how recent adaptations have played a significant role in connecting Austen’s works of the Regency period with modern readers. Austenland features an Austen-themed place in the English countryside, where guests can experience the lifestyle and social customs of the Regency era. Drawing attention to Hale’s portrayal of this unique Austen space, this essay examines how Austenland shows the way ardent fans participate in the rewriting of Austen through their theatrical experience, and how the novel satirizes the way the Austen industry responds to and exploits the growing demand of the fans. First, the essay discusses how during her 3-week visit in the Austen’s place, a 33-year old Austen enthusiast, posing as Miss Erstwhile, acts out a romance story with gentlemen actors. Then, the essay addresses the heroine’s inevitable dissatisfaction and disillusionment as she experiences fictional reality enacted in the theatrical space. Ultimately the essay demonstrates Hale’s anticipation of how the growth of the modern reader will play a role in broadening the horizons of Austen rewriting.
