퓨전재즈에 나타난 폴리리듬의 구조 연구: Peter Magadini의 드럼연주를 중심으로

Abstract

This study investigates the use of polyrhythms in Peter Magadini’s album Polyrhythm. The primary objective of this research is to explore how producers and drummers can utilize polyrhythmic structures—characterized by simultaneous execution of two distinct rhythmic patterns—within a given time signature to transcend the conventional timeline structure, thereby achieving performances that are perceived as more complex, creative, and challenging. Rather than relying on a basic analysis, this study approaches the subject from a grouping structure perspective, examining how polyrhythms are formed and applied. Graphical representations were used to illustrate the contrast between standard time signature frameworks and alternative grouping patterns in rhythm, offering visual insight into their application. The analysis revealed that Peter Magadini employed polyrhythmic techniques in four tracks, and that these techniques stemmed from a consistent conceptual foundation. Notably, in compositions written in even-meter time signatures, Magadini introduced odd-meter rhythmic structures, and vice versa. This approach resulted in a musical texture where contrasting rhythmic groupings coexist, exemplifying the essence of polyrhythm.
