Abstract

This study analyzes the current trends in research on migration to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). For this purpose, 39 academic articles published in international journals were extracted and analyzed. Studies on international migration to the UAE first appeared in the early 2000s, with the largest number of studies published in 2020. The most common research methods utilized were qualitative research methodologies, and research on South Asian migrants to the UAE were most common. In terms of research topics, migration policy and migrant identity were the most common, followed by migrant health, determinants of migration, remittances, and serial migration. Several papers also focused on the kafala system, which is the UAE’s legal framework on migrant workers’ employment and status. Based on the findings, this study suggests that future research on the UAE should include studies that link micro and macro approaches to migration, comparative studies of migration experiences that take into account migrants' occupational characteristics, studies that utilize multiple research methods, and studies on the unique characteristics of migration to the UAE.
